At its inception, the Cairo railroad bridge at the confluence of the
Mississippi and Ohio Rivers (Cairo, Illinois) was the largest and most
expensive one ever
undertaken in the USA.
At 10580' it was the longest metallic structure in the world with
a total length of over 20,000' including the wooden trestles.
The main spans were the longest pin-connected Whipple truss spans ever
built.
